Flight to Lukla, trek to Phakding. (9,500ft) This flight is very exciting. During the 35 minute flight you will see some of the Himalaya’s highest peaks: Langtang, Shisapagma, Gaurishangker, Dhudkunda and Khumbu Himal. The landing in Lukla is something you will never forget. Perched on the side of a hill, the runway goes up in order to slow down the planes once they land…and of course, they can’t land until the yaks are cleared!!!!!Lukla will be very busy with trekking group preparing to depart to the Everest region. We will have about a two and a half hour trek to Phakding. Over night at a Sherpa Lodge.
Day 6
Phakding to Namche Bazar(11,270)
From Phakding the trail continues north up the Dhud Koshi Valley. We will pass thru several villages as we head to Namche: Banker, Monjo and Jorsale. After lunch we’ll head up the “Namche Hill”to the Sherpa market: Namche Bazaar. As we climb up the steep hillside(our first encounter with what trekking really is all about!)we’ll catch our first glimpse of Everest and the snow-capped panoramo of the Himalyan giants to come. Namche is the unofficial capital of the Khumbu, the local center for trading and supplies. The main part of town has numerous homes, shops, trekkers inns and a small monastery is beautifully situated in the terraced amphitheater facing the hanging glacier below Kwangde (20,293ft)
Day 7
Namche to Sangnass via Khumjung (12,475ft)
Namche to Sangnass is only a two hour walk but the remainder of the day will be to acclimate with excursions to the Khumjung village. From here you will see Tyangboche, Thamserki, Ammadablam, Lottse, Nuptse, Everest, Tawocdhe, and Khangtega. Not only will we be looking at some of the world’s most magnificent mountains, the rhododendron forest is full of amazing birds and animals.
Day 8
Sangnasa to Tengboche (12,680ft)
In the morning the trail gradually descends to Tashinga, then steeply down to Phunki Thanga (this is when you discover that you like up better than down and you are really glad you brought your hiking poles). From here it is a two hour climb up to Tengboche
Monestary. The Tengboche monestary is the spiritual center of the Khumbu, a training center for new monks. The Rimpboche resides here and the area is considered holy; nothing can be hunted or killed. Expeditions to the worlds highest peaks have traditionally stopped here to receive the blessings of the high lama. With the scenic treasures of Ama Dablam and Mt. Everest in the background, the spirituality and scenic value of this site never fails to impress and overwhelm.
Day 9
Tengboche to Pheriche (13,500ft The trail )
From Tengboche it is a short steep descent to Devuche through the rhododendron forest. We will cross the Imja Khola and within an hour we will be in the village of Pangboche. Here is an old monestary whose prize possession is the skull of the Yeti. Another three hours and we’ll be in Pheriche.
Day 10
Day of rest in Pheriche
Day 11
Pheriche to Lobuche (16,170ft)
The trail ascends the broad, gently sloping valley from Pheriche to Phulangkarpo. Beyond Phulangkarpo the trail climbs steeply onto the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier then contours down to a stream just before Thukla. From here one hour steep climb and then another one and a half hours on a gradual nice trail to reach Lobuche.
Day 12
Lobuche to Kalapather and Lobuche
Walk along boulder fields and glacial debris to the edge of the Khumbu Glacier, then continue up to Gorak Shep, nestled under the snow-coned summit of Pumori (23,442’) and the sheer west face of Nuptse (25,850ft).(2-21/2 hrs hike). Those who are well acclimatized can hike up Kala Patar (18,192ft)(3-4 hours round trip), high above the Khumbu Glacier, for a dramatic close-up view of Everest.
